5 Second Rule, yes or no?

I'm sure there were lots of food-dropping in the past month, especially as it's the season for stuffing oneself. There are always a few people who totally abide by the 5 second rule (and maybe since I'm not one of them, I think I'm in the majority, but I could be wrong). So how nice of The Body Odd to have an article that hopefully brings light to the controversial and long-debated rule.

Here's the video from the original article, if you'd prefer watching it.

Basically, Nadine Wimmer (of the KSL news program from Utah), left pacifiers and graham crackers on the ground of four locations for 5 seconds, then took them to a lab for testing.

Sunday Linky Party #44 + Goodies

So, what are you all doing this Christmas morning? Hopefully sleeping in (or not), drinking some hot cocoa, eating with family and friends, and maybe opening some presents? Or watching a movie, perhaps? The theaters are open. I'm just glad the day's here and it's more exciting than most other weekends :) Isn't it so awesome that Christmas and New Years both fall over the weekend this year?? Anyway, there's still several more weeks of winter to go, so here's to more winter crafts and recipes!

Wake up to some lovely frosty 3D paper snowflakes, especially if you don't have real snowflakes to admire :) These'll last all winter and look really cool, from Nifty Thrifty Things.

Sunday Linky Party #43 + Goodies

Happy Sunday again! I'm not doing much this weekend... just preparing for the next one. I'm also spending some quality time with the husband, which is really nice. I think I need to sleep in a lot because last week was pretty busy. Has anyone tried shopping lately?? Probably not all that pleasant.

Anyway, here's to this week's features. I wish I had more time to make all of these! But of course, I wish I had more time in general :) Hope you had or are having a great weekend.

How cool are these tabletop moss topiaries? Not only do they look soooo interesting, they light up! (Just not shown in the above picture :) I love the containers she put them in too. Learn how to make your own from Crafting Rebellion.

Sunday Linky Party #42 + Goodies

It's crab season so we had two big dungeness crabs for dinner last night, and they were deeeelicious! :) All we did was steam them and make dipping sauce... so simple and satisfying... and much cheaper than eating them at a restaurant. There are more Christmas projects this week, and there's still plenty of time to make a few, unless you're behind on your gift shopping (which I am!) So let's get on with this week's features!

Make these cool apothecary jars and delight those candy-loving kids! Of course you don't have to put candy in them. All you need to make these are simple items found in most stores. Check it out at The Turquoise Piano.

Cool Gifts for Men

The gift-giving season is here and there's just enough shipping time for some online gift shopping. Although there are plenty of satisfactory gift items in malls and other stores, one perk about buying handmade gifts is that they'll be pretty unique. For those who are hard to shop for, I did some hunting on Etsy and found these pretty cool items! :) What do you think?

Sunday Linky Party #41 + Goodies

Only 3 more weeks until Christmas! Plenty of time to prepare decorations, menus, gifts, etc etc. I will be spending the holidays with the husband (I'm in CA, he's in NY) so we're very excited about that. For those who didn't know, we both lived in NY for a few years while he's in med school and I got my master degree. Now I'm working in CA, where we're both from, but he's still in his last year of med school. Next year he'll be in residency and we really don't know where that would be, but hopefully it'll be in CA. It's pretty hard not having him around all the time, but we're both working really hard for an amazing life together, which should begin in June of next year :) Well, begin again, I guess.

Anyway, on to this week's features!

I Cooked This Year

I baked the turkey this year in my in-laws' home and my parents also came! Thought I'd make it easy for both pairs of parents by taking on the majority of the cooking :)

Sunday Linky Party #40 + Goodies

Hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving and Black Friday. I didn't wait outside in line and didn't buy much this year. Instead, I just rested at home and watched some movies online :) Oh, the turkey I baked turned out pretty good!

These painted mason jars are so pretty and colorful. They look so artistic! I love the tutorial that The Crafty Scientist came up with.

Sunday Linky Party #39 + Goodies

It's only a few more days until Thanksgiving! I hope you're all prepared for the big dinner. I'm making the turkey this year and I still haven't researched any recipes (I'm sort of new to turkey-baking). Hope it'll turn out good (fingers crossed).

This hanging moss frame is so cute and whimsical. I love it! Our Mini Family shows us how to make one and where she got that lovely picture.

Recipes for Thanksgiving!

So Thanksgiving is coming up next week and if you need a little help coming up with a dinner plan, I've gathered several interesting (and tasty) looking options on the web that doesn't seem too hard to make. Just click on the photos or links for the recipes, which are a collection of side dishes, desserts, and miscellaneous stuff (like pumpkin puree, good for other recipes :)

Sunday Linky Party #38 + Goodies

I think this week's features could be called the "Home Edition," because they're mostly home decor projects. Of course I didn't plan it that way, but that's what happened. Today, I'm going to a work-organized potluck, and I'm not sure what to bring. I'm thinking a chocolate dessert, since that's my favorite, so maybe the brownie bites with pumpkin cheesecake mousse by Pressed Down, Shaken Together, featured in the last linky party. Thanks girl! :) Hopefully it'll turn out as nice as the pictures look.

If you have a ton of jewelry and tend to leave them in a disorganized mess (like I do), this may be the project that will greatly improve your life. Thanks to this useful tutorial from The 36th Avenue, you can have the most amazing jewelry board ever :) Check out her pillowcases with pockets project too!

Meat Keeps Holiday Guests Calm

If you haven't noticed in the past years of your entire life, everyone gets a little antsy during the holiday season. Whether it's finding parking, Christmas shopping, or grocery shopping for big holiday dinners, people are a little more nuts than usual. Sometimes I wonder why we can't all calm down a little, but I'm probably hypocritically plowing through an aisle of toys while wondering said thought. Thanks to researchers (or people who are eternally curious about other people) and just in time for the biggest dinner party coming up in a few weeks, research suggests that meat actually makes us less aggressive. (Sorry vegetarians! Be warned that there will be lots of pictures of meat).

Sunday Linky Party #37 + Goodies

Get ready to fall into fall! Haha, yep :) So hope you all had a good Halloween last week. Now we're getting close to Thanksgiving and that warm fuzzy feeling is starting to creep up, if it hasn't already crept up on you. I don't have much going on this weekend-- I guess you can say it's a lull between holidays. Hope you're all having a nice season despite the cold!

Let Photographis welcome you to autumn with her (?) gallery of amazing photos. Let's start this week off with some visual poetic inspiration!

Craving Fatty Foods? Sleep More

According to a small study (via The Body Odd), not getting enough ZZZs can make it harder for you (and me) to resist temptation. That makes sense. Whenever I'm tired at work, I end up drinking a coke and eating whatever candy I can find around my desk and/or the kitchen. I'm also more likely to eat junky food at lunch.

October 30, 2011

Sunday Linky Party #36 + Goodies

Happy Halloween all! Only one more day and it's time to celebrate! I went to a Halloween party with some friends last night and ate too much candy. I also probably won't be wearing a costume to work tomorrow because apparently it's not a tradition. Oh well. Hope you all aren't slackers and have gotten your pumpkin carving done by now :) If you're still looking for last minute ideas, check out the cute tulle bats below.

I know most of you (and me) probably won't have time to do much crafting in one day, but this felt tulle bat is super fast and easy and it's sooo cute! It's probably the last and only craft I can get in before we move on to Thanksgiving :) Check it out at Pressed Down, Shaken Together.

Sweet Tooth = Sweet Personality?

Just in time for Halloween, let us ponder whether having a sweet tooth equals having a sweet personality. After all, we do use taste-related words to describe others -- in fact, I just used "sweet" to describe a type of personality :) We use words like "honey," "sweetie pie," and "cupcake" to positively describe kind and caring people, and use words like "bitter" and "salty" to describe not-so-likeable people. Once again, I've been reading The Body Odd and they've found a couple of studies that claim individuals with a sweet spot also show sweet behaviors.

Sunday Linky Party #35 + Goodies

Only one more week until Halloween! Perfect time to check out some fall and Halloween craft tutorials to make the big day even more fun. Of course, there are other amazing non-Halloween crafts as well :) Check out this week's super impressive line-up! I'm a bit rushed because I'm blogging at a friend's housewarming party (I am such a bad friend, I know -_-). There are also a few more features this week than usual because of the holidays. I think it's an acceptable exception.

China (part 2)

I came back from vacation almost 2 weeks ago and this is a continuation of pictures from my post last week, which was more about the streets of Beijing. This time I'm focusing on food because that's what we're all interested in, right? I mean, who doesn't love food? Once again, excuse the unprofessional quality of the pictures, including tilted angles :) You know, I just can't seem to stand still and take a picture at the same time.

[Warning: image heavy!]

Sugar-coated hawthorne berries on a stick! Sooooo good and probably healthy since I'm eating fruit, right?

Sunday Linky Party #34 + Goodies

Hi all! Welcome back to the Sunday Linky Party! I was gone for a couple of weeks for vacation (which you can check out here) and it's time to settle back into everyday life :) I really wish I could take vacations any time and for any length of time, but maybe I'm asking for too much.

Here are the features from the last Linky Party. It's so nice to look through everyone's submissions again :) routine is sometimes comforting. There are some great projects and recipes, as usual, and I can't wait to see all of your new stuff! I think I'm featuring a few more projects than usual this week.

Can I say that this is an amazing handbag + tutorial? It's not often you find a complete tutorial for a somewhat detailed and complicated purse like this, which is why I MUST share it with you. Check it out at R.Kay Design!

China - Beijing (part 1)

So I've been on vacation in China for a couple of weeks and now I'm back! :) Yay. It's good to be back. I've taken a ton of pictures and can't decide which ones to upload. Here are a few from Beijing-- to get a sense of the place and people. Not sure how many parts I'm going to post (there're still pictures of food and a couple of other cities!) I'll just post these for now :) Excuse the blurriness, un-straightness, and anything else weird. Trying to take pictures and walk among huge crowds while avoiding getting hit by vehicles or looking like a complete idiot results in shakiness. Oh, and I don't have a nice camera.

Yes, let us start off with this Bruce Lee themed fast food restaurant called "Kung Fu." This was in one of the 2008 Olympic buildings and I saw it in a couple of other cities too. Regrettably, I did not try the food here because I wanted to eat at non-fast-food restaurants.

On Vacation!

Hi all, I am on vacation from 9/22 to 10/10 so there will be no posts or Sunday Linky Parties from now until then. Where am I going? To China! :O Yep, pretty exciting. I have no idea if I'll be able to access my blog or e-mail (since I hear certain sites are blocked there) and I should really take a break from technology anyway (except for the camera :). For those who are wondering, the next effective Sunday Linky Party will be on 10/16.

I will actually be visiting the Great Wall of China so I hope my pictures will be as awesome as the one above! Well, may as well post some pictures of China I've found on Etsy :) I wonder what most of the country looks like now that they've had so much development.

Sunday Linky Party #33 + Goodies

I think this weekend's line-up could be called the "sewing edition" because there were a lot of great sewing projects :) I'm also going on vacation for a little over 2 weeks so I may miss 2 or 3 Sunday Linky Parties. I'll have a post up about that soon!

This four seasons bean bag is sooooo cute! I love the fabric, the embroidery, and the idea. It's easy enough that I can make it for some buddies :) Yay. Check it out at The Crafty Cpa.

September 13, 2011

Maybe it's a little early for a post like this, but I'm seeing a lot of fall-inspired items on Etsy and it's transitioning me into the mood for autumn. Pumpkin hits the spot right now, and since I'm a little hungry, everything's going to be food-related. Ready?

Sunday Linky Party #32 + Goodies

I'd like to wish you all a "happy Sunday," but today is unfortunately the anniversary of a very tragic event that happened 10 years ago. Please take a moment to remember and appreciate how lucky we are to have our wonderful families, friends, and homes. We are lucky to have the means and opportunities to create all these amazing crafts and recipes that bring positivity to ourselves and to the lives of those around us. Remember to love and value the important people and things around us because nothing lasts forever.

I think this weekend is going to be "Recipe Weekend" because there were a lot of amazing recipes from the last linky. Food is comfort for the soul!

These fabric buttons are super cute. I like how you can make them using any fabric you want, then they can be made into earrings, pins, magnets, and whatever else you can think of. Find out how at Craft Buds.

Are You Affected by the Weather?

I can't believe that it's September already! I love summer because I love the hot temperatures, sunshine, and longer days. Now it's all coming to an end as autumn slowly (or actually, rapidly) approaches. Just thinking about it makes me a little sad. I've noticed that my mood is directly affected by the weather and I think that's the case for many many people. Have you ever felt that your moods are tied to the weather as well?

What Summer Means To Me by Kristybee
Yes, I want to live the kind of charmed life evoked by these photos.

Thanks to studies done by psychologists (they never let me down), there is evidence that weather does indeed directly affect the moods of some of us. Now we can say we're not making this stuff up when we blame our crankiness on the rain (or the sun).

Sunday Linky Party #31 + Goodies

Happy Labor Day Weekend! My friends and I will be having a barbecue in the park, so I'm excited! There are also lots of good sales this weekend, but I need to not shop, so more stuff for everyone else, yay :) Have a great relaxing time, if nothing else, and check out this week's features!

Reconstruct Your Old Clothing (part 2)

In continuation of last week's Part 1 involving reconstructing shirts and such, Part 2 focuses on sweaters. Some of these projects I found are so cool, I'm kind of tempted to scour Goodwill and other second-hand stores for high quality fibered sweaters, but that would defeat the purpose of me purging my closet and getting rid of stuff. Sometimes, the internet is not good for me.

Sunday Linky Party #30 + Goodies

Hi everyone! How're you all doing this week? I've spent a wonderful month with my hubby while he was studying for the Step 2 (he's almost done with med school) but now he's started rotations again and left for somewhere far away today :( I'll be working as usual and waiting patiently for us to finally settle down somewhere together, like a real family. Don't worry, I make it sound much worse than it really is. Only half a year more until he's a resident, just like in "Scrubs," or "House," or even "Gray's Anatomy," which, btw, is also a required book in the curriculum.

This week, get ready for more quality projects to improve your life in some way or other! Thanks for being such a positive source on the internet! :)

Reconstruct Your Old Clothing (part 1)

I've been purging out my closet lately to make room for new clothes (and to generally get rid of stuff that I haven't worn for years and probably never will wear again). After awhile, I started feeling wasteful, wondering why I bought all this stuff only to not wear them?? If only I could scold Jen-of-the-past and tell her to stop shopping. Then I decided to check out the internet for ideas to revamp all my stuff. Boy, did I find a lot of stuff...

Cute Bento Box Lunches

Alright, I've been eating a lot of Japanese food for lunch because there's a Japanese supermarket near my work that sells packaged lunches for a very reasonable price range. Unfortunately, they do not sell super cute bento boxes like the ones I'm going to show you. One day, I'd like to make a couple of these for my future kids and be the coolest mom ever, but for now, let's just gush over how cute and fun they look! :)

Going to visit a friend in Sacramento today :) Not sure what to do there, but I'm excited. We have some great projects again this week and I can't wait to try some. I really need more space in my home. Actually, I really need to do some "spring" cleaning and purging!

Top Words on Your Blog

Ever wonder what the most recent keywords to your blog or website are? Apparently, mine are about making orange juice and partying, ha! I found this awesome website called Wordle, which lets you submit a paragraph in a word box or the link to your website, and instantly creates this amazing word cloud by picking out the words that appear the most. This is a useful tool because it helps you see what your blog/site is really about, whether that's what you want it to be or not.

Sunday Linky Party #27 + Goodies

So on Friday night, I worked late, and then headed to YardHouse, a pretty classic American restaurant serving burgers, seafood, and "the world's largest selection of draft beer," so they say. Don't know if any of you have heard of them, but they're from Southern California and had recently opened one in Northern California, which means the one (and only one) any of us Bay Area folks go to is extremely popular with long wait times. To make this short, my hubby and our two friends tried a bunch of their beers (that came in samplers) and I discovered I don't know much about beer at all :) We also had a delicious chocolate souffle cake that the lava cake recipe far below reminds me of.

Are you one of those people who have trouble picking out the perfect color scheme? Well, that's okay, because you'll always find perfectly complementary colors on a paint chip from a paint store. The Crafty Cpa did just that and made them into beautifully chic coasters, for everyone to enjoy :)

The Truth About 100% Orange Juice?

I was feeling a little sick today so I thought drinking some orange juice would help. I've always heard that Vitamin C and lots of liquids are good for recovering from colds (although I had a slight fever, so maybe that wouldn't have helped). Interestingly, I found this article, while browsing Yahoo, that states even "100% pure" orange juice is artificially flavored.

Orange Ginger Marmalade by BartonArtel

No wonder the typical "fresh-squeezed" orange juice from grocery stores never tasted like fresh oranges to me, which is why I never liked orange juice much. Apparently, in order to mass-produce orange juice, big name brands (like Tropicana, Minute Maid, Florida's Natural, etc) pasteurize fresh orange juice and take out all of the oxygen in order to preserve it without adding chemicals (the juice is then stored in million-gallon tanks for up to a year before shipping out to grocery stores). Once the oxygen has been removed, the juice no longer tastes much like oranges, so companies have their own blend of artificial flavoring to make the juice taste like oranges again and to make sure each carton is consistently flavored with the taste their juices are known for.

Sunday Linky Party #26 + Goodies

Well, I don't have much going on today. My husband is annoying me with his indecision about whether he wants to eat at home or not. I think I just want to hit the restaurant because it's easier. He can stay home by himself and ponder about what he wants while I do my own thing -_-

Here are this week's featured projects! Right now, I'm thinking that if I make any of the recipes below, I'm not sharing it with anyone, and definitely not with my husband.

Sunday Linky Party #25 + Goodies

It's a sunny Sunday this week. Unfortunately, I read on the news that the heat wave has traveled to the East Coast. I can't imagine how it would feel being in 100 degree weather PLUS humidity. Regular NY summers are hot enough already, but good thing I moved this year. I'm excited because my husband is coming back to CA today! He'll be here for a month, which means we'll be doing something fun every weekend (I hope), ha! Weekends just don't feel long enough. I'm a big advocate for the 4-day work week :)

Oh my, what to feature this week. It's been another week of amazing projects. I'm really thankful for all of you linking up because reading your projects makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :) kind of like when I used to make crafts with my mom as a child, and this has been particularly helpful this weekend because the weather's dark and dreary. Summers in northern California can be temperamental, and I'm not sure about most of you, but my mood is somewhat affected by the weather. Maybe I need to move to Hawaii someday!

Beach Comber

This weekend, a friend and I made a trip down to Santa Cruz for some leisurely beach hiking. Although Santa Cruz is famous for its beach boardwalk, there are lots of small, hidden beaches along the coastline, frequented by locals. I always find one that I haven't been to, and this is one of them :) There was even a set of abandoned railroad tracks that we walked down for awhile. I'm kicking myself for not taking a picture!

Sunday Linky Party #23 + Goodies

Last week, hubby and I tested whether $$$$ sushi was much better than $$ sushi (according to Yelp price ratings) and the conclusion is... it is much better! BUT, is $$$$ sushi worth all that money? No. I'd say the sushi was really worth $$$. It's kind of like buying clothes. Although designer clothes are better quality than your typical department store clothes, it's still over-inflated in pricing.

Onto this week's featured projects and recipes!

It rained like crazy today and the traffic home was so bad. The humidity (which is rare in Cali) and clouds reminded me of summer storms in NY :) Am tired, going to sleep... btw, my blog is still on Eastern time, which I'm probably not going to change any time soon...

Sunday Linky Party #21 + Goodies

Well, I did absolutely nothing today. I slept in, ate lots of food, and caught up on show-watching on the internet. And I feel very satisfied right now :) My husband called me this afternoon to tell me about what he did today (he's in NYC, I'm in the SF Bay Area, so his day's almost over due to the 3 hr difference), and sometimes he has this annoying way of sticking to a topic and not letting it go, so I told him I'm not going to talk about it anymore and hung up on him. A few minutes later, he calls me back and, without skipping a beat, continues on telling me about the rest of his day as if we never stopped conversing. Sigh, can't stay mad at something like that, lol.

Yosemite in the Spring

I took a few days off about a month ago to hike and hang out with hubby/a bunch of friends in Yosemite and meant to make a post about it, but procrastination had gotten the best of me, until now.

The money shot!

So here are the views! Hiking in the gorgeous Spring weather with the best company one can find :) I was extremely tired and ready to hit the floor by the time we were done (I'm very out of shape thanks to the office), but I'm kind of tempted to go back again... In one study, subjects were asked to hold either light or heavy clipboards while reacting to different scenarios. Those who held the heavy clipboards rated job candidate resumes as being more serious, and allocated more money to serious social issues, although their decisions were not effected on less important issues (such as regulation of public bathrooms).

It's summer and the weather's wonderfully warm. I love that it's still light outside at 8pm as well, don't you? Father's Day is coming up and so is barbecue season, and you know how dads love to grill :) This week we've got a lot of outstanding projects as usual, and recipes for a perfect evening out on the lawn. Here's to another glorious Sunday!

Make something personal for the father in your life (be it your dad or a husband), such as this tote or t-shirt. Head over to The Silly Pearl for a tutorial on how to make your own graphic prints and put them onto fabric.
