Coffee and Donuts May Be Good For You

Most people are addicted to coffee, and not just in the morning. Many of us notice and chuckle to ourselves at the stereotypical police car in front of the donut shop. Everyone has their guilty pleasures, but what if your guilty pleasure (of a daily donut and coffee in the morning) is actually good for you?

According to an article on The Body Odd (one of my favorite sources of interesting information :), Spanish researchers have found that caffeine and glucose actually make you smarter. Apparently, the sugar-caffeine combo boosts your brain in terms of memory and attention.

Woohoo! Now I can tell myself I'm just preparing my mind for work instead of feeling guilty for indulging in goodies. I guess the slightly healthier trick is to get regular coffee with or without milk, and skip the special signature drinks.

The study was done on a small group of 18-25 year olds (not a very large or diverse group, in my opinion). After fasting overnight, subjects received either water, water + caffeine, water + glucose, or water + caffeine + glucose. The group that received all three tested highest on attention, manual dexterity, visuo-spatial and frontal functions, and memory. The group that only received water did the worst.

So basically:

caffeine + water > water
glucose + water > water
caffeine + glucose + water > caffeine/glucose + water > water

Simple! :) As long as I get my sugar and caffeine, everything's fine.
(and that's how those officers stay on top of crime ;)

Yay! This also tells me that the several pieces of dark chocolate I eat on a daily basis are also good for me. :)

mmmm....doughnuts!
i wonder how long this "increased intelligence" lasted. I mean, did it only last for an hour, forcing me to eat 8 dounghnuts a day?? And then I would be HUGE!!! and diabetic.
But dont get me wrong, i will use this study to justify the occasional coke and doughnut!

Ha ha, that's great news! I am not a huge coffee person, but I'm still glad to know glucose+water>water. I love sugar in the morning! The items you included are adorable, I love the crochet coffee and donut.

I haven't been 18-25 in many many years. Wondering if it works on us old folk? If so, with the coffee and cinnamon bun I had for breakfast - I should be good to go!

I love doughnuts, cereal is going to be so boring after looking at all these doughnuts makes me want to go out and get some.
Little know fact that they are also a great diet food, less calories because of the holes.
