According to an article on The Body Odd (one of my favorite sources of interesting information :), Spanish researchers have found that caffeine and glucose actually make you smarter. Apparently, the sugar-caffeine combo boosts your brain in terms of memory and attention.
Woohoo! Now I can tell myself I'm just preparing my mind for work instead of feeling guilty for indulging in goodies. I guess the slightly healthier trick is to get regular coffee with or without milk, and skip the special signature drinks.
The study was done on a small group of 18-25 year olds (not a very large or diverse group, in my opinion). After fasting overnight, subjects received either water, water + caffeine, water + glucose, or water + caffeine + glucose. The group that received all three tested highest on attention, manual dexterity, visuo-spatial and frontal functions, and memory. The group that only received water did the worst.
caffeine + water > water
glucose + water > water
caffeine + glucose + water > caffeine/glucose + water > water
Simple! :) As long as I get my sugar and caffeine, everything's fine.
(and that's how those officers stay on top of crime ;)
