Wear Red to Impress the Ladies?

Well, another day, another snowstorm.

Much more romantic when seen as a photographic print in the comfort of a warm cozy couch
Up to the Sky by ChelseaVictoria

I've been reading a lot of articles on the internet again and found a treasure trove of information in The Body Odd. Here's one about a study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, that suggests "the color red makes a man more attractive and sexually desirable to a woman." All the man has to do is wear a piece of red or even stand in front of a red background. The study results were the same regardless of country. Hmm... that's never occurred to me before. Am I more attracted to men who wear red? I think I'm more likely to stare at a stunning woman in red.

Maybe if he were wearing red while doing yoga in a snowstorm? (the model is a girl, but we'll ignore that little detail)

Apparently, red makes men appear more powerful and higher in status, more likely to make lots of money, and more likely to climb higher on the social ladder. Looks like girls know what they want. Is that why so many male politicians wear red ties?

Red + blue = power colors (so they say). The squid? Brings out your inner hipster.

Red is also attractive in the rest of the animal kingdom, as it is a sign of high testosterone. Examples of animals who benefit: monkeys with redder rumps and male robins with the reddest breast. Of course, for humans, you can't just look like a slob while wearing a red beanie and expect to attract every woman you pass by. You still have to clean up nice :)

What do you think? I'm a little skeptical, as I've never been aware of being attracted to red on men. But just because I'm not aware doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I'll have to pay more attention the next time I check out a cute guy...

Fudgesicles

I made an amazing discovery yesterday, which is to make the easiest fudgesicle pops ever! Okay, maybe it's not really a new discovery or anything - it's just amazing to me, because I can't believe I haven't thought of it already. It's sooooooo easy!

DO NOT EAT - this is soap. Please resist the urge, especially if you are bathing with this. (I don't think I've ever wanted to eat soap more than today...)
Fudgesicle Handmade Soapsicle by SoapStore

All you need is a package of Jello instant chocolate pudding, some milk, popsicle molds, and a freezer. Just make your chocolate pudding following the instructions on the package, pour into the molds, and freeze. Then it's done! Finished! Easy! :D The lazy man's (or woman's) chocolate pop. Now I can have fudgesicles whenever I want. Isn't it great? Life is great. (Just humor me if it seems like I've just discovered the sky is blue).

Maybe someone will give you a pity popsicle if you wear these (as in: "Aww, give that poor girl a fudgesicle.")

Holy Zeus, what am I?

This is catastrophic news, guys. It was announced yesterday that the zodiac signs we've been following are outdated because the earth's changes in rotation has changed the timing of our zodiac signs. According to the new zodiac sign dates, I'm now a virgo instead of a libra. WHAT? I'm too laid-back, accepting of others, unrepressed, and selfish to be a virgo. I mean, I am not "born to serve," alright?

But now that I'm reading about virgo, I do see some similarities to me, I guess? For example, my brain is on overdrive a lot of the time (except that it doesn't mean I get a million things done), and I am prone to skepticism (saved me a few times from being scammed AND I'm a consistent winner when playing the game Mafia, especially when I'm not the mafia :). Unfortunately, I am not as studious as a virgo, except when I'm really interested in something (then time ain't a thang, e.g. there is no discernment between night and day at that point). I'm not a worrywart nor am I a hypochondriac, and I do not like being surrounded by tones of tan or warm yellow. Nothing against virgos (both my mom and my hubby are, er.. were virgos), but it sounds a little more intense than I am. Actually, neither of them are hypochondriacs either.

I like libra - it sounds so much cooler than virgo. It's the sign of partnership and I'm a good partner! Just ask my husband (cough). I have a very good sense of balance and fair play, make well thought out and informed decisions, and love beautiful things :). I also consider all points of a situation when confronted with an opposing view. And I love the colors of the sunset sky - so romantic!

Oh wait, your zodiac sign hasn't changed, great. Apparently in the Western world, our signs are seasonally based, whereas in the Eastern world, our signs are fixed to constellations. Okay. I guess that just means that you should believe whatever you want to believe and you are who you are no matter what sign you associate with :) Sounds logical to me.

Something Edgy: Beat Up Creations

Picture Day Series

Several of my Etsy friends are supporting the Recyclers Guild Team by joining their contest, so I'd like to show some support as well (and it was easy, because the BeatUpCreations shop has so many interesting/eye-catching items!) I'd also like to mention that Angela, of BeatUpCreations, is a fellow team member of mine from the Indie Free Spirits team :)

BeatUpCreations uses orphaned and unloved antique plates and transforms them into new modern portrait plates. She also makes one-of-a-kind creations from recycled and forgotten items.

You can see her work and learn more about her here:

Now, for a few of my favorites :) Enjoy!

It's Hard Being a Knight

"The knight departing for new adventures offends his lady, yet she has nothing but contempt for him if he remains at her feet." - Simone de Beauvoir

Well, off to work again.
Knight in Shining Armor by RivetingArt

I always found that quote to be hilariously funny but equally true. I'm guilty of being grumpy when I feel my husband hasn't spent enough time with me (after working and studying) but sometimes, when he's home all day, I wish he'd leave me alone (so I can work on something) because he's got nothing else to do except (unintentionally) bother me.

So naive.
Saint George Playset by StAnnesPixies

So I wonder, if the husband is the brave hero in one's life, who is the dragon? Does he think that when he's off conquering the world (making a living), he's impressing his lady at home?

Mew.
Fiery Orange Dragon by MissCake

Or is the dragon more elusive than that, revealing itself in relationship issues that must be slain over and over again? The foolhardy hero, striving for material gain and fame in his field, risks losing to the real dragon because he never saw it coming.

Reminds me of the old classic movie, Kramer vs. Kramer. It doesn't have any dragons or knights in it - it's actually quite modern - but I think it fits the bill. We recently got Netflix so we've been watching a lot of movies :)

Home sweet home.

No matter what happens in our outside lives, what's most important is our relationships with one another. With today's economy, it's easy to feel defeated when we suffer setbacks in our careers. But the real dragon is always with us and we need to make sure it doesn't destroy our bonds with the few constants we can depend on, regardless of what happens to us in the physical world.

Trying to Enjoy the Snow

It's mid-January and snowing again. I've decided that snow is nice and all, very pretty to look at and to think about, but I'd really rather roll around in fine white sand on a beach somewhere and sip a mojito.

I think this fulfills both requirements.

And along with that fantasy, I may as well win the lottery. But really, I'm trying to appreciate the snow. Winter used to be my favorite season, I'm not sure why, because I clearly like to go out without wearing a jacket. But I think there's something poetic about the whiteness and barrenness of a winter landscape. Robert Frost's last name, being Frost, may have added to that perception.

Winter feels lonely when there's a lot of snow. Snow makes lunch with friends nearly impossible and a walk to the nearest cafe a treacherous journey. Run out of milk for hot cocoa and need to go to the grocery store? Too bad.

Neat Woodpile by SugarBridge

But what I love about snow and winter is the anticipation of warmth. Getting back to the apartment, walking through the door, taking off my boots, and seeing my favorite people at home - you'd think I haven't been back in years. Hanging out with the neighbors (luckily I live in an apartment building) and playing board games because we're all stuck inside with nothing better to do - when else would we stop to get together in our busy lives?

The joy of winter is having an excuse to break schedules and routines, while knowing it won't last. When the snow stops and the roads are salted, people burst into the streets like the buildings can no longer contain them. Then it's time to go about business again because even though there may be another snow storm tomorrow, for the moment it feels like spring.

Festive Snacks

Yesterday, I decided to make some hot wings and clam chowder.

food

I tell myself it's healthy because I baked the wings without oil and I used 2% milk for the clam chowder (and a little butter...) Still healthier than what I'd get in a restaurant! Whew, conscience pacified.

Lamingtons Pink Vanilla Coconut by tookies

Valentine's day's coming up (in a month) and stores are already stocking up on hearts and lovey dovey stuff. I'm really more concerned about what we're going to eat. Should we eat a love-filled homemade meal or go out to a nice restaurant? Hmm... even though I enjoy the challenge of creating a good meal, there are some things even I can't make (like sushi. I'm afraid of messing up raw fish) but I definitely want a chocolate cake waiting for me at home, whether we go out or not.

Happy 2011

2011 Calendar Year of the Rabbit by brookewoolley

Let's start off 2011 with a giant leap! (to prevent confusion: it's not leap year, but it is the year of the rabbit)

This new year's eve, I spent the night partying, snacking, drinking, and playing games with all of my friends in my little studio! I can't imagine a better way of spending the last night of the year besides being warm and cozy with good the best company ever! :)

  • Pay it forward to 15 recently discovered bloggers.
  • Contact those bloggers about the award!

Here are a few things about myself:

  • I'm happily married to my husband (who I sometimes refer to as Hubby on this blog) and I'm very happy that he voluntarily does the dishes.
  • I love dogs. They are my favorite animals in the world!
  • I have a hamster named Hamlette. She's my current dog substitute. Don't feel sorry for her because she's really adorable.
  • I would like a big backyard someday so I can do some organic gardening with the companionship of a few chickens.
  • I can eat seafood all day.
  • I'm surprisingly domestic, despite telling my mom (many years ago as a teenager) that I'll never learn to cook because in the 21st century, women do not have to cook!
  • I love cooking. It's one of my favorite hobbies. My husband appreciates it because his cooking is inedible.

Electronic Santa Claus

I've been seeing this Target commercial on tv a lot lately. The song, Electronic Santa Claus by Blazer Force, has been stuck in my head because it's so damn catchy. After singing this song to myself for days, I've decided to scour Etsy for all things geeky under the inspiration of the Electronic Santa Claus!

HALP! DO NOT WANT IN JAR!

Cheer up your computer screen with some festive Christmas lights!

Everything You'll Need for a Glamourous New Years Eve

Christmas hasn't come yet, but it's about time to start planning for New Years Eve (because NYE means parties, pretty dresses, and cute arm candy, am I right or am I right?) Found a couple knock out dresses that I just adore on Etsy. What's great is that no one else will have a dress like yours :)

I've seen a lot of white dresses on the red carpet recently, but you can order this one in lots of other colors too!
